Curators Talk
Dinner with a Duke
SATURDAY OCTOBER 2nd 2pm, £5
Art historian, curator and author Philippa Glanville will speak in detail about the porcelain, silver and glass that glittered at dinners hosted by the Third Duke of Portland. Guests enjoyed French cuisine, Italian icecreams and patisseries as well as pineapples, melons and grapes that were grown in Welbeck’s hothouses.
Philippa will also give an intriguing insight into the behind the scenes servant world of these dinners, revealing that the Duke’s upper servants also ate and drank well with three course meals and daily wine and beer from Welbeck’s own brewery.
Definitely a captivating insight not to be missed!

Eating the Enlightenment
Dinner with a Duke
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 6th 2pm, £5
Internationally renowned food historian Ivan Day reveals that dining in eighteenth century England was not always the grease-ridden, free-for-all so often depicted in the paintings and caricatures of Hogarth, Rowlandson and Gilray, but more frequently an expression of highly refined taste.
Ivan Day has been cooking Georgian food for more than three decades using original equipment. Ivan has recreated authentic period dining tables in country houses and museums throughout Britain, Europe and the USA as well as for films and TV dramas. He will introduce us to the kitchens, the utensils, the food itself and the material culture it spawned.

Artist Talk
Dinner with a Duke
SATURDAY March 19th 2011 2pm, £5
London-based artist, writer and broadcaster Jane Wildgoose will talk about how her research into Margaret Duchess of Portland (1715-1785) brought her to the Harley Gallery at Welbeck, where she first saw pieces from the duchess’s magnificent silver-gift dessert service.
Jane’s curiosity to learn how this service might have been used led her to accounts of extravagant sugarwork table decorations, together with the story of how these were gradually replaced by fine European porcelain. The curiosity into these sugarwork table decorations is a clear inspiration to the exhibition, which will be the backdrop to this fascinating talk.
