Dinner with a Duke Decoding food and drink at Welbeck 1690-1910
April 2010 - February 2012
Revealing fascinating details about food, recipes and entertaining on a grand scale - from Wiliam of Orange's visit to Welbeck in 1695 until the onset of the 1914 war and the end of the 'Golden Age' of the great country house.
History at The Harley Gallery

Changing exhibitions explore and illuminate the lives of members of the Cavendish family who have lived at Welbeck since 1606 when Welbeck Abbey and the Estate was given to Charles Cavendish by his mother, Bess of Hardwick.
Miniature portraits, jewellery, manuscripts and books, paintings and porcelain are some of the objects on display in the museum which highlight the various interests and collecting habits of the family.
Family ancestors include Edward Harley, whose collecting habits are responsible for an extensive fine and decorative art collection still in family hands and whose manuscript collection helped found the British Library. Edward bought the famous horse, “The Bloodied shouldered Arabian” and shipped him over to Britain. It is said that every racehorse in Britain is descended from him or another horse, “The Darley Arabian”.
