Richard trained at Manchester Metropolitan University and specialised in reduction fire and oriental ceramics. It was at Manchester he says “I met the three loves of my life – my future wife Lucy (also studying ceramics), oriental pottery, and the potter’s wheel.”

Richard draws on Eastern ceramic traditions. Stoneware glazes and forms from Song China, construction and firing techniques from Japan and Korean brushwork.

He spends hours repeating brushwork designs to achieve a fluid simplicity that matches the thrown clay.   His aim is to produce work with a quiet voice, an eastern feel, with forms and compositions that create a narrative of landscape.
