The 6th Duke of Portland (1857 – 1943) inherited Welbeck from his cousin, who he had never met. Together with his wife, Winifred, he set about refurbishing Welbeck Abbey to create a house fit for grand Edwardian entertaining.

The 6th Duke was a considerate collector, thoughtfully adding to The Portland Collection and employing the collection’s first curator, William Goulding.
